Spain is the easiest “yes” I give. It’s a country built for the kind of travel my clients want — long lunches, late light, cities that stay up with you — and one of the most openly welcoming places in the world for two men traveling together. There’s the Spain of energy and the Spain of stillness, and the best trips hold both. Madrid rewards a few days of museums, neighborhood bars, and that nocturnal rhythm the city does better than anywhere. Then we move south, where Andalusia unfolds slowly — the Alhambra at dawn, Seville’s orange-tree courtyards, flamenco in a room rather than a theater.
We pace it for the two of you, and shape it around culture, food, or sun, whichever you’re chasing.
Is Spain welcoming for gay travelers?
As welcoming as it gets. Spain legalized same-sex marriage in 2005 — the third country in the world to do so — and has ranked among the most LGBTQ-friendly nations ever since. Madrid’s Pride is one of the largest in Europe, and its Chueca district has been the beating heart of gay life in the capital for decades. But acceptance here isn’t confined to the big cities or to June: across Andalusia, in Seville and Granada, my clients are met with the same easy warmth. Two men checking into a small hotel together is simply unremarkable — which is exactly how it should feel.
When to go, and for how long
Spain is at its best in spring (April–June) and autumn (September–October), when Andalusia is warm rather than fierce and the cities are alive but not overrun. High summer suits the coast; inland it runs hot. Most of our Spanish journeys run 10 to 12 nights — enough for Madrid, a proper week in the south, and the kind of unhurried pace Spain practically demands.
