The trip in a nutshell

A subtropical island in the middle of the Atlantic, all cliffs, flowers and deep-green hills — and one of the gentlest, safest places in Portugal to simply be a couple. We base you in Funchal, the island’s handsome capital, and reach out from there: the dramatic north coast and the thatched houses of Santana, the volcanic pools of Porto Moniz, a walk along one of the famous levadas, and a sunrise on the island’s high peaks. The pace is slow on purpose — long lunches, garden afternoons, and dinners that taste of the place. Designed, start to finish, around the two of you.

Portugal beyond the cities

Most first trips to Portugal are Lisbon and Porto — and they should be. But the country reaches a long way out into the Atlantic, and Madeira is its garden: a single mild island where you can walk a cliff-edge levada in the morning and be at a harbor table by lunch. It carries the same easy Portuguese welcome the mainland is known for — Funchal has its own small, relaxed gay community and an annual Pride — with the calm of an island that was never built for crowds or for partying. If you’ve done the cities, or you simply want Portugal at its slowest and greenest, this is the route.

Who this is for

This route is for the couple who wants nature, food and quiet over nightlife — the two men who’d rather walk a levada and linger over a long lunch than chase a scene. It suits travelers who love a garden, a viewpoint and a glass of Madeira at sunset, and who value a destination that feels genuinely safe and unbothered. Lovely on its own, and an ideal slow second act after Lisbon or Porto.

A sample itinerary

Route map — The Atlantic Garden: A Madeira Island Escape
Day 1 · Arrive in Funchal

A private transfer from the airport and time to settle into your hotel and the island’s pace. An easy first outing along the east coast — the golden bay of Machico and the old fishing village of Caniçal — before a relaxed first evening.

Day 2 · The north coast & Santana

A private day to the green north: the famous thatched A-frame houses of Santana, sweeping coast road views, and the ancient Laurisilva — a UNESCO World Heritage forest. Lunch at a local table along the way.

Day 3 · Porto Moniz

A private day west to Porto Moniz, where volcanic rock forms natural sea pools you can swim in. A scenic coast drive, dramatic cliffs and viewpoints, and a long lunch by the water.

Day 4 · A levada walk & cider

A private guided walk along one of Madeira’s levadas — the centuries-old irrigation channels that thread the hills — at a gentle grade, with the island’s flora and history along the way. A cider tasting and lunch among the hills to follow.

Day 5 · Funchal, slowly

A private half-day in the capital: the viewpoints, the lanes of the Old Town, and the Mercado dos Lavradores, the city market full of exotic fruit and flowers. A tasting of Madeiran cheeses and local teas, then the afternoon is yours.

Day 6 · Pico do Areeiro at sunrise

An early start by jeep to Pico do Areeiro, one of the island’s highest peaks, to watch the sun come up over a sea of cloud and mountain. A free afternoon back in Funchal, then dinner in a local family’s home — three courses, island wine, and real Madeiran hospitality.

Day 7 · Funchal at your own pace

A free day to enjoy Funchal as you like: the botanical garden, the cable car up to Monte, the Old Town’s painted doors, a glass of the island’s namesake wine looking over the Atlantic. A fine-dining dinner to close the trip.

Day 8 · Funchal → home

A leisurely breakfast and a last look at the sea, then a private transfer to the airport for your onward flight — already thinking about the next Portuguese chapter.

Make this itinerary yours

This is a starting point, not a fixed package. Tell me your dates and how you like to travel, and I’ll come back with a Madeira itinerary shaped around the two of you — more walking or more wine, one base or two, an add-on in Lisbon or Porto — until it’s unmistakably yours.
