Malta
Honey-coloured stone, open water, and a welcome that was never in question.
Malta, as you are
Malta is the smallest country I send clients to, and the one that surprises them most. An island you can cross in an hour holds Valletta’s baroque streets, megalithic temples older than many of the world’s great monuments, and a coastline of sea caves and turquoise water. Nothing is far from anything else — which is exactly what makes it travel so well.
I send Gay Up Travel clients to Malta because it does two things at once: the icons done properly — Valletta, Mdina, Gozo — and the unhurried Mediterranean that most islands stopped offering years ago. Marsaxlokk in harbour light, a full day on the lagoon, dinners that run late because nobody is moving you along.
And it works at whatever pace you want. Malta is genuinely lively after dark if that is your kind of trip, and completely calm if it isn’t. We build it either way — you tell me which.
Is Malta welcoming for gay travelers?
Short answer: yes, comfortably. Malta is one of the easiest places in the Mediterranean to travel as a couple, and that shows up less in the law than in the ordinary texture of a day there. The long version has a page of its own — what the law says, what it actually feels like on the ground, and what I tell clients before they go: read the full Malta guide.
When to go, and for how long
Malta travels well from March into November, and the shoulder months give you the sea without the heat or the crowds. Eight to ten nights is the length that lets Valletta, the Three Cities, the temples and Gozo each have their own day instead of being ticked off. Trips start from $6,000 per person, flights not included, based on double occupancy.
