Portugal
Gentle, soulful, and remarkably easy to love.
Portugal, as you are
Portugal has quietly become one of my clients’ favorites, and it’s easy to see why. It’s gentle, soulful, and remarkably easy to travel — a small country where the light, the food, and the welcome all seem to slow you down in the best way. I send Gay Up Travel clients here for the obvious draw of Lisbon and Porto, and for what lies between and beyond them: the river valleys, the coast, the towns that haven’t learned to perform for visitors.
The classic thread runs Lisbon to Porto, and it’s classic for a reason — two beautiful, walkable cities with very different temperaments, joined by some of Europe’s most underrated countryside. Lisbon is hills, light, and miradouros; Porto is granite, river, and port lodges across the water. In between we build in the Douro Valley — terraced vineyards and slow boats.
We pace it for the two of you, around food, wine, and the unhurried rhythm Portugal does so well.

Is Portugal welcoming for gay travelers?
Genuinely, and without fuss. Portugal legalized same-sex marriage in 2010 and is consistently ranked among Europe’s most LGBTQ-friendly countries. Lisbon’s Príncipe Real has long been the relaxed center of gay life in the capital — more neighborhood than scene — and Porto carries the same unbothered ease. What my clients notice here is the absence of tension: Portugal’s warmth is understated rather than loud, which suits the way we travel. Two men exploring together draw no second glance.
When to go, and for how long
Portugal travels beautifully across a long season — spring (April–June) and autumn (September–October) are ideal, mild and golden, while summer is warm and lively along the coast. Most of our Portuguese journeys run 8 to 12 nights — enough for both cities, the Douro, and a day or two that you leave completely open.
