Greece
Islands, ancient stone, and an easy welcome.
Greece, as you are
Greece is the destination my clients ask for most — and the one most people only half-know. Beyond the two or three islands everyone can name lies a whole country of them: bright, slow, and far more welcoming than its postcards suggest. I send Gay Up Travel clients to Greece because it does two things at once — the icons you came for, and the quiet, lived-in Greece you didn’t think to ask for.
There isn’t one Greece, so there isn’t one trip. Athens rewards a few unhurried days, ancient stone and sharp modern neighborhoods side by side. The icons — Santorini’s caldera, Mykonos’s white lanes — earn their fame, and we build them in with care. Yet the Greece my clients remember longest is often the quieter Cyclades: Naxos, Folegandros, Milos, Sifnos — hill villages, empty afternoon coves, a taverna where the owner brings an extra plate.
We pace every journey for the two of you — honeymoon-slow or friends-with-time — and shape it around sea, culture, or food, whichever pulls you.
Is Greece welcoming for gay travelers?
Short answer: yes — and now on paper as clearly as in person. In February 2024 Greece became the first Orthodox Christian country to legalize same-sex marriage, granting married same-sex couples full parental rights; civil partnerships have been recognized since 2015. Mykonos has been one of the world’s great gay destinations for half a century, and Athens carries a confident, year-round LGBTQ+ culture. But what my clients feel most, island to island, is philoxenia — the Greek instinct to treat a guest as family. Two men traveling together are, in my experience, simply made welcome. Here is my full, honest answer to is Greece gay friendly?
When to go, and for how long
Greece travels most beautifully from April into June and again from September into November, when the light turns golden and the islands exhale. High summer is glorious and lively, Mykonos especially. Most of our Greek journeys run 7 to 12 nights — enough for Athens, a quiet island, and one of the icons without ever rushing a ferry.
